lawTechcamp 2012

April 26th, 2012 by blogadmin — 3:01pm

lawTechcamp will again be holding it’s annual, free of charge event at the University of Toronto
Faculty of Law, 78 Queen’s Park in Toronto, on May 12th, from 8 am to 4 pm.

This year’s event offers Ontario lawyers the opportunity to obtain up to 6 hours of free CPD
credits and has double the number of speakers for those interested in the intersection between
law and technology, law professionals, and technology enthusiasts.

lawTechcamp bridges the gap between technology and law communities and is organized
by the founder and CEO of mylegalbriefcase.com, Monica Goyal, Mitch Kowalski, author
of Avoiding Extinction: Reimagining Legal Services For The 21st Century, and Sapna
Mahboobani, partner at Cobalt.

The event features a long list of well-known speakers in law and technology discussing a
wide range of issues such as: digital legacy, knowledge management in law firms, and the the
role of technology in the legal workforce. Some of the more provocative titles include : ‘ My
Coworker is a Robot: The [Coming] Age of Legal Informatics’ and ’Technology is Changing the
Real Estate Transaction and Creating New Opportunities for Lawyers’. There will also be a brief
demo of local legal tech startups.

Those interested in the nexus of law and technology, how new technologies are applied to
law, and how these technologies are increasing accessibility to justice, are invited to attend the
event.

This event is free but guests must register.

Lawtimes: Bits & Bytes: Canada moving slowly on innovation of legal services

April 9th, 2012 by blogadmin — 11:40am

Richard Susskind’s book The End of Lawyers? was inspiring because it spoke of a different type of legal practice that moved away from a traditional approach to a model that embraced business innovation and technology to provide commodity-like legal services.

But I wonder how and when this will happen in Canada. In the meantime, there are some indicators that Susskind’s futuristic pronouncements are becoming reality in Britain.

For example, legalfutures.com reported that one-third of conveyancing firms are considering conversion to alternative business structures.

For all the promise, I’m still not convinced this revolution will happen quickly as law schools don’t train lawyers to be entrepreneurs at the forefront of technology innovation. But of notable exception are two upcoming programs: Law Without Walls and 21st Century Law Practice.

LawTimes: Bits & Bytes: Boomerang a handy tool for busy lawyers

March 29th, 2012 by blogadmin — 8:16am

LawTimes post by Monica Goyal

“If you use Gmail as your primary business e-mail provider, you may be interested in a new plugin for Firefox or Chrome called Boomerang.

This neat little plugin allows you to control when you send and receive messages by, for example, scheduling your e-mail to be sent at predetermined times throughout the day. At the same time, it helps you unclutter your mailbox and reminds you if you don’t hear back from someone so you can follow up.

Why would you care to do this? Boomerang provides some subtle but stress-relieving advantages.”

What are class action suits and how do they work? at yourmoney.ca

March 27th, 2012 by blogadmin — 10:09am

Interested in basics on class action – you can read this blog post at yourmoney.ca

“A class action suit is where a large group of people brings a claim to court. It’s a situation where every single person in the group has suffered the same type of harm. An example of this is where a group of people takes the same type of medication and suffers the same type of side effects. In a case like this, if individuals brought the case before the court themself, their costs would likely outweigh the amount of money that they’d recover.”
