According to Health Canada, there is currently no evidence of a risk to human health if this insulation is sealed behind wallboards and floorboards, isolated in an attic, or otherwise kept from exposure to the interior environment. However, when inhaled in significant quantities, asbestos fibers can cause asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. Asbestosis is a scarring of the lungs which makes breathing difficult. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer of the lining of the chest or abdominal cavity. To minimize your risk of amphibole asbestos exposure you must avoid disturbing vermiculite-based insulation in any way.
